Pablo Márquez
Guitarist Pablo Márquez grew up in Salta, a city of rich cultural traditions in the North West of Argentina. After studying with Jorge Martínez Zárate and Eduardo Fernández in Buenos Aires, Pablo moved to Europe to complete his musical training with Javier Hinojosa (Early Music) and Eric Sobzyck (conducting). He also followed the teaching of the legendary pianist György Sebök, who made the most profound and lasting impression on him.
Several top prizes at the most important international competitions (Radio France in Paris, Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janeiro, Geneva, Munich), launched Pablo Márquez in a brilliant solo career around the world. He collaborated with great musicians (e.g. Dino Saluzzi, Anja Lechner, Mario Caroli) and the most prestigious ensembles (e.g. Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Rosamunde Quartett, Musicatreize). As a soloist, he regularly performs with major orchestras including the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, the Nordwest Deustche Philharmonie and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, under the baton of Josep Pons, Susanna Mälkki, Roland Hayrabedian and others. He is also a founding member of the Ensemble AlmaViva, dedicated in premiering and performing chamber music of Latin-american composers.
Passionately dedicated to contemporary music, Pablo Márquez has worked with some of the greatest composers of our time, including Luciano Berio, György Kurtág and Mauricio Kagel. In 1995, Pierre Boulez invited him to play the Sequenza XI of Berio on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the Italian composer.
In 2007, ECM New Series released their first ever classical guitar recording, Musica del Delphin, featuring music of the Spanish Renaissance composer Luys de Narváez. With this CD, Pablo Márquez won critical acclaim all over the world (New York Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and nearly all the specialised magazines…). As well as, in 2008 the label Kaïros released his newest recording, featuring Luca Francesconi’s A Fuoco, concerto for guitar & ensemble, with the Ensemble Intercontemporain conducted by Susanna Mälkki. This later was chosen CD of the month October by the italian magazine Musica, and received the Grand Prix du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy in Paris.
Since 2005 Pablo Márquez is a Professor at the Musik-Akademie in Basel. He also gives regular master classes all around the world.
